Camp Peniel was gorgeous. Whether we were kayaking or exploring the streams of water by a path along the trees, we were constantly being taken aback by the beauty. We were having fun but learning at the same time; for example, we played a cultural game to help get us prepared for the culture shock we would soon experience upon entering Africa. We split up into a few groups and were given a specific (made up) culture to act out while interacting with another group`s culture. While there was a lot of laughter, it also helped us understand what it could be like to walk in to a new and unknown culture, or also to have one walk in to your own. Another activity we did was just to help out around the camp doing various work projects, including painting walls, sanding doors, and cleaning canoes. We had two speakers come to talk to us, Claude Vachon talked to us about poverty, justice and his ministry in Montreal, and Gabriel Boucher flying out from France for the week, teaching us about overcoming the habitual sin in our lives and what the fear of God really is. We were blessed by camp`s amazing food, our vegan and vegetarian quite well-accomodated, a wonderful place to sleep (albeit the mice) and a beautiful place to spend time together and continue to strengthen our relationships.

Au camp Péniel c’était superbe. Soit que nous pouvions faire du kayak ou que nous explorions les cours d’eau par les sentiers au travers des arbres, nous étions constamment émerveillés par la beauté. Nous avions autant de plaisir que nous apprenions.  Par exemple, nous avons joué à un jeu culturel pour nous aider à nous préparer au choc culturel que nous vivrons probablement dans peu de temps lors de notre arrivée en Afrique. Nous avons été séparés en petits groupes et on nous a donné des rôles culturels spécifiques à jouer tout en interagissant avec les autres des « autres cultures ». Les rires étaient bel et bien présents mais nous avons aussi compris ce que ce pourrait être d’intégrer une culture nouvelle et inconnue.  Nous avons aussi participé au camp en offrant une journée de service, peinturant, sablant des portes et nettoyant les canots et kayaks.  Nous avons deux enseignants, Claude Vachon nous a enseigné sur la pauvreté et la justice sociale à Montréal et Gabriel Boucher est venu directement de France et nous a enseigné sur ce qu’était la crainte de Dieu et sur comment combattre des péchés fréquents dans nos vies.  Nous avons été bénis par la merveilleuse cuisine du camp, les végétarienne et végétalienne était bien nourries, par le bel endroit où nous avons dormi (malgré les petites souris) et par les lieux de rencontre dans la nature où nous avons pu solidifier nos relations.
